Dell Laptop Hard Drive Diagnostics

Most Dell laptop and desktop computers will come with a handy utility already built into them for performing at least some form of basic diagnostics when you need to do a little bit of initial troubleshooting. This report will show you how to test the hard drive which is installed in your Dell laptop or desktop computer.

Some symptoms which should make you intuit that your hard drive is either going bad or has gone bad to some extent include:

Hard Drive

No Post - your laptop or desktop computer just hangs and does nothing when you turn it on. It may sit with the lights on, but do nothing more. It may come on for a incorporate of seconds and then shut itself back off.

Errors - instead of seeing the Windows splash screen after your laptop completes it's Post you get an error which may mention that there is no boot device, or that maybe there is no mountable volume on the drive.

Sluggish performance - Often when a hard drive is failing you will be able to have some form of a heads up about this unfortunate fact by witnessing a noticeable decline in your systems performance when you are literally in the laptop's Os (Operating System).

Windows Warning - Microsoft Windows does have the ability to literally warn you straight through a message which will pop up on your screen letting you know that you should save, then backup all leading data immediately because a hard drive failure is imminent. Now, it is not necessarily a good idea to wait until this message is displayed because often times a hard drive will go wholly bad, unusable, without this warning message ever showing up on your display screen at all.

On your Dell laptop or desktop computer you will likely find a handy utility which will run a quick test on your hard drive for you. This test is very reliable, at least for determining if your hard drive has literally gone bad.

The way you can passage this test is as follows:
Power on your Dell computer, you will see the Dell splash screen, then very briefly you will see a message referring to F2 and F12 in the upper right hand projection of your laptop or desktop screen. The trick is to press the F12 key on your keyboard right when you see the message about F2 and F12 show up in the upper right hand projection of your screen.

This will bring up a Bios boot menu and you will plainly select the one which refers to the hard drive diagnostics. Dissimilar Dell laptop or desktop models will offer Dissimilar choices based on the hard drive being Ide or Sata. Once you have prime your drive the testing will begin. After around two to five minutes or so, depending on the size of your hard drive, you will see the results of the test. The results will either be a Pass, or a fail error code. The thing to remember with the Dell hard drive diagnostics is that a return error code 7 means that your hard drive does literally need to be replaced. Backup any leading data which you may have on your laptop or desktop computer and replace your hard drive.

Computer Hard Drives - Hard Drive Problems and Symptoms

Is your hard drive acting up? Do you fear the loss of data, downtime, and inherent loss of revenue this could bring? Let's take a look at diagnosing hard drive problems, and what the symptoms are.

The surest sign of a major problem is this: when you write data to the disk, and retrieve it later, errors pop up. It might take the form of small amounts of data going missing, or being turned into gibberish. If this happens in more than one program, disk failure looms in the very near future.

Hard Drive

Some users "cure" this problem by reformatting the drive, then re-installing the Os and all programs. Unfortunately, this doesn't accurate the root cause of the trouble, and it will only be a matter of time before it pops up again, perhaps fatally.

Strange noises, particularly high pitched squeaks, are often attributed to the hard drive. In the majority of cases, these squeaks aren't advent from the drive, but from a case fan, or power supply fan.

Listen closely with one of the side panels removed to zero in on the sound. If necessary, unplug the drive's power cable, then turn the computer on. If you still hear the squeak, you know it's a fan. But if the squeak goes away, only to return when you boot the hard drive, you have a very serious problem.

If your hard drive seems to be working too much, constantly chugging away, all the time sending data to and from Ram, the problem isn't your drive. The odds are you need more Ram. Today's giant programs are memory hogs, gigantic in size, creating multi-megabyte files.

If your hard drive is slowing down there are a amount of distinct causes. These won't lead to disk failure, but they can be frustrating.

The first, and easiest to deal with, is drive fragmentation. In Xp and Vista it's easy to defragment a drive, requiring only a few mouse clicks, yet most users let months go by without doing it. They wait until their machines have slowed to a crawl before performing this most basic act of computer maintenance.

Another cause is the volume of data stored there. The more data on the disk, the slower retrieval and write-to rates become. The cure is obvious. Either do a bit of house cleaning, removing unneeded files, or add other drive.

Sometimes, a sluggish hard drive can be a symptom of spyware, adware, or a virus. A good protection program can scan your drive, and tell you if you have one of these problems.

Hard Drives - Size Does Matter, So Does Speed

Hard drives are leading to every computer out there. They are needed to store all the leading data, from the operating theory to the most recent Facebook photo your uploading. They come in all sizes and speeds, yes you can get distinct sizes and speeds of hard drives...

Why does speed matter?
Speed refers to the internal spinning of the drive disk, as the disk spins the eye in the drive reads the data on the disk. The faster the drive spins the disk the faster that the data can be read, interpreted and relayed back to you, so it helps speed up the retrieval of information.

Hard Drive

Some speed options
The most tasteless speed is 7200 Rpms, that means the hard drive is spinning at 7200 revolutions per minute. Pretty quick right? They get faster! drives can speed up to 15,000 Rpms, grabbing data at lightning fast speeds is very possible with these drives, we have even have build computers that will load from pressing the power button to full functional in under 60 seconds. Imagine that being able to press power and in less than a puny your on the internet or play your beloved game! Its possible with modern technology.

Size matters!
Depending on what your using your computer for, the drive size matters. For the midpoint computer user 500 Gb is more than sufficient. If your salvage a lot of movies, or a die hard gamer. 500 Gb might fill up fast. So 1 Tb or more would be better. You can even link any drives together to get more space. Awhile back we build a computer with 8 Tb of warehouse capacity, that is over 1.5 million songs!

What do I need?
Depends on what you want to do, if your just surfing the internet, talking to friends or doing some E-Paper work then you'll be fine with a 120 Gb - 500 Gb drive running 7200 Rpm, depending on how much you save. If your going to be doing programming, web/graphics establish or try to take over the enemies base in the most recent and greatest games, then I would make sure the speed is about 7200 Rpm and size... Well... How many hard drives can you put in your case?

Hard Drive mend Using Free Software

Contrary to popular belief, if a computer does not boot due to hard drive corruption all data is not lost and the hard drive may even be repairable. There are 2 types of hard drive damage. One is fixable by you and the other requires a professional data recovery facility.

Physical Drive Damage - bodily damage is the worst. Data recovery can only be done by professionals and can cost up to ,500 (sometimes higher). bodily damage regularly consists of bad actuator arms, damaged platters or fried controller cards.

Hard Drive

Non-Physical Drive Damage - Non-Physical damage (Npd) is what we're going to be discussing in this article. Npd occurs when the operating system's file ideas (fat or ntfs) gets corrupted due to an improper shutdown (for example). While this damage is may seem genuinely bad (if it's preventing you from booting your Pc), it's genuinely fixable with some software that's already including in any Windows Pc and a Usb external hard drive enclosure.

Here are a list of items that you'll need to result the instructions below:

Another working computer with Windows Xp, Vista or Windows 7
Find out what kind of hard drive you have. There are 2 types. Sata (small flat connector) and Pata (a.k.a Ide) which has a connector with about 30 pins. An external Usb hard drive enclosure with a connector for the type of drive you're going to be connecting to it (you can grab one of these at BestBuy for about Usd).

Please result the steps below to accomplish a non-physical mend (software repair) on a non-bootable hard drive.

1. Take the drive out of the computer.
2. Connect the hard drive to the connector on the Usb enclosure.
3. Connect a Usb cable from the enclosure to the computer that's working.
4. Power on the Usb enclosure.
5. An external drive will probably load in your list of ready hard drives. You can see this list by opening "My Computer" or "Computer". Take note of the drive letter for the external hard drive.
6. Now it's time to load a agenda called Chkdsk (Check Disk).
7. Click Start (if you're on Windows Xp) or click the Windows globe (on the lowest left for Vista and Windows 7).
8. On Windows Xp click Run, then type Cmd. On Windows Vista and 7 type Cmd where it says "Search Programs and Files". This will open a black command prompt window.
9. In the command prompt type chkdsk "the drive letter you want to check": /r and press enter. So here is an example chkdsk g: /r then press the enter key.
10. This process can take hours. I've had a few that took days.
11. If this command completes successfully your drive should be repaired adequate for you to recover the data from it and you might genuinely be able to boot from it again.

A word of warning. If your drive ever has any errors on it (bad sectors) it's reached the end of it's life and should be substituted Asap. You'll be able to see this in the narrative provided to by the chkdsk command at the end of it's scan.
